Dental surgeries may be needed to address a variety of problems with the teeth, jaw, gums and other facial structures. At Pompano Family Dental, we aim to make all surgical procedures extremely comfortable and as painless as possible for all our patients.
Some of the oral surgeries conducted at our practice include:
Tooth extraction refers to the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. One of the most common reasons for extraction is when a tooth is damaged beyond repair. Other reasons for removing teeth include a crowded mouth, infection, preparation for orthodontic treatment, gum disease and wisdom teeth impaction. Before a tooth is removed, we will examine your medical and dental history and take X-rays. From your X-ray, we will be able to gather information on the length, shape, and position of the tooth and the surrounding bone. Your tooth will be anesthetized before the extraction so that you will not feel any pain. Once the area is numb, the tooth is loosened then extracted with dental forceps. Once extraction is done, we may close the area with a stitch and place a gauze pad to control bleeding.
Bone grafting refers to the addition of artificial or natural grafts sourced externally or from a patient’s body to the jawbone. Sometimes, lost teeth and age can cause the jawbone to deteriorate and become weak. In such cases, the bone density may not be enough for the jaw to support dental implants. Grafting procedures can be used to add lost bone to enhance the success rate of implant surgery.
The placement of bone grafts begins with the administration of local anesthesia. An incision is made in the jawbone and the graft is carefully placed inside. The area is then stitched and allowed to heal for a few months so that the graft can fuse with the jawbone. Once the area has healed, implants can be placed.
